THE MONUMENT IS COMPLETE!!

You are invited to the dedication of the new Veterans' Memorial on the Unity Town Common. This Dedication will take place on Sunday, November 8th, so that more people will be able to attend.

The Unity Fire Department has graciously offered to have free hamburgers and hotdogs at noon. There will be a few military vehicles to check out.  The Dedication will begin at 1:o0 pm.

The Honor Guard from the Newport American Legion will open the program. The American Legion will be bringing their cannon.

After the opening ceremony we will move inside the Town Hall for the remainder of the program. This will feature essays from the Unity elementary 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, a key-note speaker, and a re-en actor from Fort No. 4; who will give a short, interesting talk on the muskets used by our first Unity residents.

Unity has had many men and women volunteer to serve our country over the years starting with the Revolutionary war. The Historical Society and the Town of Unity are honoring them with a beautiful black granite monument.

Keep in mind that you can still purchase a brick dedicated for you or your loved one(s).
Please see below for this information.

PROJECTS:

Unity Historical Society is building a new Veterans Memorial
It is planned to be a black granite 2 sided monolith.  The monolith is to be set on a granite base upon a brick patio with flag poles, on the Unity Town Common.

As a fundraiser, we will be selling bricks for $40 each with 3 lines of text or $50 each with 3 lines of text and a clip art image.  Over the next year, we will be looking to the people of town to help by donating, volunteering or purchasing bricks.
The project dedication date is November of 2020.

The Town Pound

UHS is working with the Sullivan County, Unity School's 8th graders, and the State to rehabilitate the Town Pound. (The first pound was voted for in 1787 and was built of logs on the common.)

On April 25, 1796 the town of Unity voted: to build a pound on the Range way near Richard
Moody's on the ledge.  Voted it shall be 35 feet square
Voted to build it with stone 6 feet high, 4 feet thick at the bottom and 18 inches at the top, to be built with a true taper from the bottom to the top with both sides alike.
Voted it shall have 1 foot square timber on the top with a decent gate of hard wood, well hung. Said pound, set up with public vendue and struck off to Daniel Batchelder at 7 pound 10 shilling to be completed by the first of July next.
Pound Keepers were active until 1887. A name to remember might be the Pound keeper in 1874 was Abelalonymus Huntoon.

If you have not seen the Pound, it is on Carroll Brook Road across from the Center Cemetery and just around the bend on the left.
